Wow, this really knocked me out. For a film that manages to hit it's comedic notes with ease, it also manages to absolutely devastate with its emotional ones. These characters managed to break my heart in different, unexpected ways through the story. 2016 has been a real mixed bag for movies this year, but there have been some great ones recently, and I think of all the good movies I've seen this year, the emotional journey of Manchester by the Sea might be the best.
There are so many elements of this that reminded me of the Buffy episode The Body. The long, uncomfortable shots, the silence, the forcing the audience to witness the reality of death and grief. Really beautiful stuff.
