The River ★★★★

80

The sensual textures, the warming imagery, the teenage confusion, the unstoppable heartache, the visual mastery. Renoir films this as a dream, where exotic isn't exotic and the toxicity of romanticism consumes the vibrant landscape, latching itself like a tumor onto an unsuspecting host. A beautiful front cannot always be beautiful, as it is pealed back and revealed the colors are facades and the anger overpowers love. But the river beats like a heart, in order to pump the life back into the once gorgeous world and to begin again a cycle of beauty.
