Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark

    ★★★½

Beautifully shot with an ok story.

  • The Barn

    The Barn

    ★½

Would have possibly been ok if it hadn’t been trying so desperately to look like a 80s throwback.

  • Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

    Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

    ★★½

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes for people who do ‘how smart are you’ quizzes on Facebook. No doubt the best effects are the dinosaurs and Bryce Dallas Howard in a singlet, but the rest of it, including Chris ‘Star-bored’ Pratt and his amazing one trick pony show, are pretty dull.

Toby Jones turns up looking like an Oompa Loompa accountant as well!

  • Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)

    ★★★★

Imagine if Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez wrote and directed Bridget Joneses Diary... but with Margot Robbie. The best description I heard of it was ‘it’s like smoking a cigarette whilst eating a chocolate bar’.

  • Gods of Egypt

    Gods of Egypt

    ★★

It’s a generic fantasy story but the idea of the gods of Egypt actually living amongst men, as giants, is interesting. Sadly, the generic storyline, which most of these blockbustery films have anyway, isn’t improved by super miscasting, crappy acting and some shitty CGI.. the effects aren’t ALL bad but there’s a couple of moments where it’s just terrible.

There is some interesting set and costume design though, so that’s a plus.

  • The Keep

    The Keep

    ★★★½

Hadn’t seen this film in years and quite liked it. Considering the year the effects are pretty cool and the soundtrack kicked my arse.

  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2

    ★★★★½

Fantastic ending to a series that starts off dodgey but improved as time went on. If only other film series could be as cohesive as this .

  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1

    ★★★★

Doing the ‘kill main characters’ thing before Game of Thrones ever did, the first part of the finale of Harry Potter is violent and horrible and thrilling all at the same time. The story is also coming to a cohesive close, mainly due to the fact it’s story was written in advance and not unfinished like the aforementioned GoT or a clusterfuck of awful that Star Wars became.

  • Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

    ★★★★

The darkness really falls on the world of Harry Potter and somehow turns into a high fantasy that is disturbingly violent, both mentally and physically.

  • Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

    ★★★★

The Potter series finally starts to get good, and stops being a series of kiddy films and starts to evolve into a Hammer horror styled fantasy adventure.

  • Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

    ★★★★

The maturity of the Potter films continues but still contains a touch of whimsy from the earlier films

  • The Incredible Melting Man
