    The Intern

high-octane fashion-forward tech startup entrepreneur, wife, and mom ~*has it all*~ but doesn't know how to keep it together until she meets a sweet old man father figure because her own mom is a weird terrorist? the second most prominent woman character is a love interest, to the male co-protagonist. the third is whiny trope of a millennial who robert deniro has to threaten with getting fat before she takes her health & work-life balance into account? patriarchy is so great

While the MI films aren't known for their sex-having, it was incredibly refreshing to see an action thriller with a leading male character team up with a co-starring woman, obv be into each other because they are hot straight people, but LEAVE IT AT THAT. Romance was never necessary to get the story moving. + viewers got to see shirtless Tom Cruise and the beautiful Rebecca Ferguson in a crazy-high-slit dress & bikini for sex appeal points. Colour me impressed.

personally, i wish there was more commentary on what sex means with this narrative. it completely ignores any non-PIV heterosexual sex and doesn't address any implications about rape or sexual assault (except maybe how the "It" passes on the "curse"?). i didn't feel it was too preach-y about promiscuity or STDs or whatever — it was a great, terrifying horror film. but in 2015 i'm so, so tired of any viewpoints completely oblivious to straight-boy-puts-his-dick-in-straight-girl sex (even if she was on top a couple times).
