A mostly competently put together film but wow is it fucking boring.

Jean Grey is flat out unlikeable and I found her situation completely uninteresting. The script is so horrendous it takes half the film for some of these characters to make the most basic of revelations.

I didn't even realize there was some sort of battle going on between Jean and the "Phoenix entity" until after the film was over and I had it explained to me: the movie…

Yoooooo what did I just watch??
I need some time to unpack this one.

General thoughts for the time being:

-Great pacing: it's 2 hours and felt like half that

-Amazing cinematography. The colors speak for themselves (if I do rewatch, I have to do it in 4K with HDR)

-Dialogue is pretty bad, honestly. Most of it is just on the nose, awful, or both. I think people need to check Refn's conversational flow and choices once in awhile…

Not super sure what to say but the short version is: it's mediocre.

Now I'm not going to make any comparisons to The Matrix because it's seemingly present in every review of the film so far. Instead I want to have a slightly different conversation: wasted potential. The film gives you an explanation for the events of the film but then does nothing really interesting with these ideas. It's not that it has to be explained to some higher extent…

    Um, alright then

I get what Gaspar Noé is going for but it just didn't really work for me. I appreciate some of the main character's inner dialogue, but that's the only real positive I have to say. The acting ranges from good to almost laughably bad. The music is quite terrible: it ranges from generic to absolutely grating.

This is basically an all around worse version of Shortbus. Both films use sex to demonstrate deeper human emotion, but Shortbus
