Shirkers 2018
Shirkers tells the interesting tale of a girl who finally recovers a film she made in her youth.
There is an enormous amount of footage to draw on, and the original footage becomes something else entirely. It is at its best when it focuses on Georges and his volatile nature.
There are problems with the director being so close to the material. Certain points try to pull much more weight than seems reasonable, and some of the comments are too manicured.
It is impressive how all three girls became so successful in the film industry.

Matt Damon stars through a bland film with limited tension, as he tries to survive as the sole occupant of Mars.
There is so little drama early on in the film that a major point is made over whether Damon’s crew have been informed over whether he is alive or not. It is such a strange point to be given so much weight considering the circumstances.

Verhoeven presents his pulpy science-fiction military satire that plays as a serviceable action adventure.
The film looks fantastic with the art direction and character design being a highlight. It is still hard to conceive how an arachnid functions with all its appendages. Verhoeven pushes the gore to a comical level and makes the most of Nazi imagery.
One major fault is that it is easy to comprehend where the satire begins, but hard to understand where it ends. It seems…
