    Lightyear

    ★★★

Lightyear is fine. It has some genuinely cool sci-fi concepts that they could've gone further with had the tone not felt all wrong. This is supposed to be the in-universe film that made Andy, a kid from 1995, go out and buy a Buzz Lightyear toy because he loved it so much, but the writing, the constant one liners and jokes made this feel like one of those modern day, studio mandated tentpoles trying to emulate a marvel movie, it…

    Top Gun: Maverick

    ★★★★

To keep things brief, Top Gun: Maverick is a huge huge improvement over the original film, with a much more well thought out story, more characters to care for, and improved presentation in general, the dogfight action scenes look and sound fantastic in the theater. I was really tired watching this after only 5 hours of sleep so I may have to see it again, but this is a legacy sequel that had no right to be this good.

This Scorsese/DeNiro stretch was truly something else, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and this all within six years, sheesh. Scorsese's direction isn't as flashy as the other two, but the more laid back style makes the story feel real in a way that's much more unsettling. DeNiro's playful innocence compared to how grounded and patient almost every other character is creates this unique vibe of incredibly unsettling but also weirdly hilarious, and I can't think of any other film that makes me feel both the same way The King of Comedy does.

  • Raging Bull

    Raging Bull

    ★★★★½

Just as brutal to watch on the 2nd time round, Scorsese's made films about a lot of bad people, but this one doesn't even attempt to make his life to seem any bit desirable, it's just a cold downward spiral of toxicity, jealousy and insecurity from beginning to end. No doubt is it one of his best.

MCU's 2021 needed to end with a full W. I'll admit that I really didn't think a movie this ambitious and bonkers could work without prior setup but it pulls a multiverse plot out of its ass and somehow gets the job done.

The movie starts off pretty frantic, I appreciate how they tackled Peter's identity crisis but it's clear the movie wants to move on to the cool stuff and some of it rushes by a little too quickly.…
