I'm a sucker for 80s movies, but this one didn't click or strike a chord. Have I become jaded? Should I have seen it earlier than today? The answer probably lies in the middle. I was never engaged, and never felt the need for speed. There's a brilliant movie lurking beneath the superficial surface, and I just didn't find it. I feel bad bashing this classic piece of Hollywood nostalgia and machoism.

A most excellent soundtrack, though. And I'm still excited for the sequel. I have great faith in Joseph Kosinski. He's a credit to our race, to quote Watto.

'West Side Story', then. Quite the masterpiece. Loved it. Give Rachel Zegler all the awards you can think of. Rita Moreno is a delight. She was 88 during the shoot, and yet she absolutely dominates the action whenever she's on screen. She reigns supreme as a thespian force of nature. 'Ghostbusters: Afterlife', then. An attempt to wash away the bitter aftertaste of the 2016 reboot (which I never hated, it was just mediocre, misguided and mostly unfunny). 'Afterlife' is a course correction. I loved it.

Heart, soul, ghouls, ghosts, supernatural beings, humour, practical effects, computer effects, Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, Sigourney Weaver, and then some. McKenna Grace (I had never even heard of her) is a revelation, a superb teenage actor with charm, wit and gusto.…

An absolute masterpiece of film editing and sound mixing, with the music hand-picked and selected prior to filming by director-writer Edgar Wright. This makes for a very effective pairing of visual and aural delights that can never be achieved when the soundtrack is an afterthought. Daft Punk did the same thing for 'Tron Legacy', with the same stunning results. 'Baby Driver' is a playlist set to images, and a very fine one at that. Lest ye think it's all about…
