Carol ★★★★

Mature, subtle, romantic, tragic. This is what an adult movie is like. It's not pandering, it expects you to know why everything happens even if you disagree with it. There is no Understanding Friend/Modern Audience Surrogate. There is no marked point about bravery or heroism. The characters are flawed, complicated, make mistakes, yet honest and relatable. The story is deceptively simple. The movie quietly complex.

It's been amazing watching Todd Haynes grow up, but I still prefer his earlier, angrier(?) works.
