  • Dead Man

    Dead Man

A quirky western that's a bit plodding but very humorous with several cameos to keep it interesting. Johnny Depp is fine in a role that's mostly underplaying, but Gary Farmer steals the movie as his overweight Indian companion. Very nice black and white photography too.

  • Tropic Thunder

    Tropic Thunder

A goofball comedy that doesn't just stick to spoofing action movies. It has real characters and a real story and dialog so rich in made-up slang, cultural references, and absurd phrasing that I had to turn on the subtitles to catch everything they were saying. It's Hollywood's glossy version of Tarantino's Grindhouse. Script by director Ben Stiller, actor Justin Theroux, and Etan Cohen (Idiocracy).

  • Day of Wrath

    Day of Wrath

In a world dominated by religion, and old woman is burned as a witch, and the man who condemned her must come to grips with his own young and unloved wife's affair with his son. Carl Dreyer's movie is stark and somber, with the kind of simplicity and focus on moral complexity that you find later in Bergman's films.
