Justin Peterson’s review published on Letterboxd:
Decided to take another ride with that killer gollums cave movie.
"The noise she's making, she'll bring every one of those things down on her head ... As long as it's not on mine."
Not being buzzed and sleepy did make a bit of a difference for enjoying The Descent more. The jump scares worked great to put me on edge, but overall I wish the monsters in full view would have creeped me out more. But the movie does include some solid punches of gore.
Stylistically the use of lighting in the cave was excellent, but I did not care for the spinning camera and quick-cut editing within the confined space of this setting.
The ending had me going WTF ... since I remembered there being more to it then that. Turns out I was fortunate enough to see the UK ending the first time which is much better than the US ending.
The Descent is a well made and creative survival horror film, but the girls getting killed off being disorienting, along with the overall underwhelming feel of the monsters brings this one down for me.
Thanks for reading.
Happy movie watching ... Skål!🍻
