The Favourite

The Favourite ★★★★★

Without a doubt it's clear to say that I've never seen a film like "The Favourite" before, because it's witty, peculiar, odd and insane at the same time. But that's the exact reason why this storyline didn't left me after seeing it for the first time. Now after a second viewing I can clearly say that I love it even more! Definitely my favourite movie of the year together with Roma.

And why? - Because the experimentality that it provides keeps stucking in your head and stays there. For instance, it was the first movie I've seen in 2019 and now two months later it's still the one I think most about. The events that are happening throughout the film, the characters and the script are on one hand utterly bizarre, but extremely brillant and all that leads back to it's director Yorgos Lanthimos. I haven’t gotten the opportunity to watch The Lobster and The Killing of A Sacred Deer yet, but those of you who've seen his other works know that you could describe his storytelling style best with the word "different". And if the "The Favourite" is one thing then it's that, but in a good way! Choosing fish-eye lenses for filming a period piece is totally crazy but it works in this case and that impressed me in every way.

It is also quite rare that a movie can leave me completely speechless with it's brilliant performances but the whole cast just did it, like it was the easiest thing in the world for them: Even if the main actress was in less scenes than her supporting cast, Olivia Colman deserved her Oscar in every way. She simply stole every scene she was in and combined her characters grief and loneliness in a way I have never seen on screen before. Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone both may gave the best performances of their career yet, but Nicholas Hoult clearly was my favourite character! His comedic timing was on point and I hope more people will recognise him in the future, because he always gives good performances but is still under people's radars all the time!

I can tell you that in 10 years people will not speak about Green Book anymore when it comes to "Best Movie of 2018", instead they will still point out that "The Favourite" should’ve gotten "Best Screenplay" and I will be one of them! This movie showed Hollywood that being experimental and having trust in the things you do can lead to create a masterpiece and that’s what "The Favourite" is -
 a personal favourite.
