Anomalisa ★★★½

A lot of this is inspired stuff. The set design is excellent, and there are some wonderful scene-to-scene transitions. Kaufman's dialogue perfectly captures the tedious minutiae of travel. And the voice acting is outstanding—Noonan, obviously, and Jennifer Jason Leigh is even better in this than The Hateful Eight. But it's still just a rich white guy having a midlife crisis. It's grounded in realism and handled with nuance, yes, but this falls well short of high art. Like the other great screenwriter-auteur of today, Aaron Sorkin, Kaufman needs a strong director to interpret his material. Maybe he should have got his brother Donald to do a rewrite...
