It started off strong and succeeded in gradually ratcheting up the tension at first, but the overly slow pace and thin plot really detracted from the film. The length also made it harder to appreciate the themes the film was trying to get across. It felt like the first and third acts didn't connect. I had high expectations. I was expecting something as powerful as Hereditary with the aesthetic and setting of The Wicker Man, but got an ok movie.
If I just wanted to see realistic gore, I'd watch liveleak videos. Horror movies should have some emotional hook through the story and/or characters on top of the visuals and this movie failed in that regard. The moral of the story was ham-fisted and the acting sub-par. It gets a few stars for the well-done gore and disturbing violence (although it doesn't live up to the hype), but that's all this movie has going for it.
