Midsommar ★★★★★

I loved Hereditary so much that I was a bit worried that Ari Aster’s follow-up, which was probably my most anticipated film of the year, wouldn’t live up to my sky high expectations. 
I was worried for nothing. Midsommar absolutely blew me away. It has a rather big running time, but it doesn’t feel slow or boring for a moment, which is really impressive considering how depressing and hopeless it is. And it’s absolutely, deliberately, hilarious.

This is just one sick, escalating swedish nightmare, which stuns the viewer with its ambition and audacity time after time, scene after scene, with great style and great substance. Sometimes I was so disgusted I didn’t want to see what happened on the screen, other times I felt mesmerized and my eyes were glued to the screen.

Aster gets the best out of Florence Pugh, who gives an incredible lead performance, all the way from her subtle urban anxiety to the huge grief before falling into the midsommar madness. If you’re new to her, do yourself a favor and watch Lady Macbeth right now, you won’t be disappointed. Also Jack Reynor and Will Poulter are some of the best young British-Irish actors who have some great scenes too, even though it’s mostly Pugh’s film.

I know this film will probably be super-divisive, but between my brain cells there nothing divisive in it. Ari Aster is two out of two because this is an undisputed masterpiece. And I don’t ever wanna participate in any ritualistic parties that my Swedish study friends are gonna invite me to.
