Starred up is a subtle mixture of unsettling violence, family intensity and it's brutally honesty. I somehow found myself having tremendous empathy for everyone in that prison facility. Eric, played so well by Jack O' Connell, is someone who's quite hard to find likeable in the beginning of the story because of his apathy towards life itself. But, after seeing him not only witness his father's faults but actually becoming aware of his own, you can't help but have compassion for this young man and find yourself rooting for him the rest of the way.
