Kareem’s review published on Letterboxd:
There is a lot about this that didn't really work, especially in the first two acts and it could've been much more focused (a lot of subplots and characters felt aimless and pointless), but there is also a lot that DOES work, especially the inherent utter weirdness that this film fully embraces.
It obviously also has the benefit of being based on one of the greatest fairy tales of all time, Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid, but director Smoczynska manages to hit all the most important narrative beats of the original and perfectly incorporates the adjusted and modern setting into them.
(The poor gays didn't need to die though, cmon! Search yourself another snack!)
