This is a really intriguing Korean thriller which combines a murder mystery with some commentary on the world of office workers. It's really well played with some good tension building and shocking turns and there's also some really dark humour in there mostly stemming from the office politics. This latter aspect mostly comes down to those that fit in and those that don't and while it makes for some good drama between the characters the direction it takes is too much of a reach so didn't really work for me. It's nothing that detracts from what is a good tense thriller though.

    Father Figures

This was surprisingly okay with some good laughs in the first hour as they meet their hopeful father figures. It's very white middle-class (characters who are super comfortable financially so not a care in the world on that front) which is all too common with these types of comedies but to its credit I have to say the conclusion caught me off guard. It goes somewhere I wasn't expecting and for that alone it deserves some credit. It's likely to…

    Lady Bird

I'm sad to say I kind of hated this. The selfish central character and her ambition stifling mother did not make for easy viewing and the generally aimless nature of a very normal coming of age tale left me cold (and checking the running time every twenty minutes or so). Alex Garland's follow up to Ex Machina is another thoroughly gripping sci-fi adventure. Based on books I've not read the ideas on display here are enthralling, both on a conceptual level and also a visual level. Interesting characters, beautiful and gruesome creature and world design, a great soundtrack that really adds to the tension throughout and a cast that is on good form. The fractured storytelling works wonderfully well with the ideas at the heart of the story and the ending is satisfying in the questions it answers and those it doesn't.
