Chris’s review published on Letterboxd:
My initial take is that I really liked it. Found it to be fun and entertaining from start to finish. It has flaws, one of which is its length, but I thought it was a good continuation of the world set up in Man of Steel.
Affleck was excellent as Bruce/Batman, Cavill continues his strong portrayal of Clark/Superman, Gadot was great, Eisenberg was fun and eccentric. Set pieces, sans the finale, were well staged (loved the car chase and rescue scenes) and like all Snyder films, it looks fantastic.
As I said, it does have its flaws though. For as much as I liked Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, his motivations are never really clear, which muddies the confrontation being set up. The film is also overly long and it could have been shortened greatly by nixing the Batman origin story. We all know who he is and how he came to be. The opening sequence of Bruce on the ground during the Superman/Zod battle during Man of Steel is enough set-up for Bruce/Bats here. And then there is the set-up for the other Justice League members. Woah boy! It is goofy and throw away, like any number of Marvel end credit sequences over the years, but it happens 2/3 of the way through the movie.
And I'd rather just forget about the weird visions Bruce is having of a dystopian future where Superman rules the world and Batman wears a trench coat.
Still despite these issues, the biggest being why is Lex doing these things, when it comes down to it, Bruce Wayne/Batman and Clark Kent/Superman are doing what I want them to do on screen and it was gleefully fun when they were doing it. I get that people don't like the dark tone but I dig it and I'm on board with the direction DC is going here.
