I never know quite what to make of Kubrick's peculiar cinematic style. His use of steadicam tracking shots, oddly timed dissolves, desexualization of naked female bodies (save Nicole Kidman), and propensity for jarringly slow sequences are all on display here, but do they serve this story?

I'm unconvinced that they all do, but I still find Eyes Wide Shut engrossing as hell. As long as Kidman and Cruise can bring the heart-wrenching chemistry while Kubrick delivers the impressive — though…

Docking a half-star for being a bit too self-aware. But I love these guys almost as much as Linklater does.

I already need to see this again to even begin talking about it. Such a beautiful mystery of a film.

Life as seen through the eyes of the Holy Spirit? That which is always in motion and present in creation?

    I'm not crying. You're crying.

It's staggering how authentic this film feels. The audience is invited into the difficult lives of its three subjects, director Bing Liu being one, putting us in the uncomfortable position of hearing about their hardships as well as the glorious position of seeing them skate, a time when they can truly be free.

Additionally, not only do we get to see the filming process, but we can actually sense Liu's emotions from behind the camera as well as his hesitancy to ask his loved ones the hard questions that he deems critical to raise.
