Disgustipated’s review published on Letterboxd:
There is a silent moment in the middle of this film when a couple of exhausted young men, weary after their numerous attempts to escape the bleak purgatory of the beach at Dunkirk watch in mute witness as another man shrugs off his gear and walks out into the oblivion of the ocean waves.
Amongst the screech of the Stuka bombers raining down death from above, the thwack and twang of high-speed metallic projectile death from guns unglimpsed, and everywhere the screams of the wretched in flames of existential agony, this one silent moment of a man deciding his own fate and choosing to enter the swirling darkness of his own volition completely fucked me up.
To die oneself or to be murdered by others. Either way, war is fucked.
