She is Love 2022
It’s a classic romantic comedy set-up: after years apart, exes catch a glimpse of each other through a doorway. The catch? One of them runs a boutique hotel in the countryside, and the other is an unsuspecting guest. But in writer/director Jamie Adams’ She Is Love, there’s nothing cute about this awkward meeting, and the film, which I’ve seen alternatively labeled as a romantic comedy and as a romantic drama, is never amusing enough to garner any laughs, nor does it reach the emotional heights necessary to serve as a compelling dissection of a failed relationship.

Incredible use of NYC as a set piece.

TIFF 2022
Spielberg lends his magic touch to a loving tribute to his parents, paralleling his burgeoning love of filmmaking with pivotal moments in his childhood to show how movies can help us through life. One of the most perfect endings I've seen in a while, maybe in any movie ever. Whole cast is exquisite, and Gabriel LaBelle is a particularly wonderful find. David Lynch's bit part made me absolutely ASCEND. -

Don’t think I laughed once, and while the weight of the finale did emotionally resonate with me somewhat, it came too little too late. This cast is an absolute dream (President Meryl Streep!) and they do their most, but the material is often too heavy-handed to land, on top…
