Black as Night

Black as Night

The story is not as woke as people are making it out to be, and I get the feeling that the people who have the strongest hate towards it are not the target audience. Its New Orleans post-Katrina setting was refreshing, but it doesn't quite feel fleshed out until the very end, and even then the motivations for the villain is confusing. The dialogue and characters are trying a little too hard to not be tropes, but the acting is consistent enough to enjoy. Overall, the concept is fun, but similar to Jennifer's Body, the execution would be stronger as a YA novel. Didn't love it, didn't hate it, but it was fun to watch for Halloween vibes.
