Lucas Gomes’s review published on Letterboxd:
"'Course I'm respectable. I'm old. Politicians, ugly buildings, and whores all get respectable if they last long enough."
Fuck Polanski. I mean, fuck this guy. He's a bastard. He deserves to be in jail. And he made a film that I'm in love with. Fuck him. Fuck him good.
I've been watching some great films since my film-loving epiphany last year. But this is another level. When I watched The Godfather I already knew it was supposed to be a masterpiece, and as I scroll through Letterboxd I see a lot of people using the word masterpiece as a rather commom compliment. Well, it's not. And as I scrolled down Chinatown review section I took the "masterpieces" people were giving it as granted. Boy was I wrong...
This film is very near to perfect. I'm so goddamn happy I watched it spoiler-free.
And before a crowd of angered cinephiles come after me with their torches and forks because of the "near" right there... Well, I'm still trying to get why the women beating was fine and needed for the film.
Well, fuck Polanski. This film is one of my favorites now...
