Really gritty cop drama from most of the people that brought you the French Connection. Top notch performances from Roy Scheider and the always creepy Richard Lynch. On top of that, the car chase is one of the best in the genre. I know it might be blasphemous to say, but I think I enjoyed this more than French Connection.
Just picked up the Blu-ray, which looks incredible, and I am speechless! This was unbelievable. The character exposition in the first half was perfect and it sets up a whole cast of fantastic three-dimensional characters. The attention to detail that Friedkin has in this film is astonishing. I love the line near the beginning "no one is just anything." That almost throw away line echoes throughout the remainder of the film. The suspense is breathtaking and leads to the perfect, moving resolution. This movie is tense, tough, heartbreaking, and real. This is why I love film.
