This wasn't so much funny as it was stupid. Extra star for Kristen Wiig because she rules.
This kind of felt like a Dardenne brothers film, which is not necessarily a positive thing for me, but I liked the sort of p.o.v. style and the overall understated nature of the film, which was impressive considering some of the more difficult things that happen. I had a few issues with certain plot things and how they either did or didn't resolve themselves, but I mainly just enjoyed this as a character study of a flawed family man trying to do the right thing.
I should say this movie is probably not meant for me; it is meant for those who read and loved the books. That said, wow, this was a complete failure as a film for those of us who have not read the books. Look, I know we are all sick of this continuous stream of Iranian vampire movies. I mean you can only watch so many. But hear me out, this one is awesome and worth seeing.
Beautiful black and white cinematography, a fantastic soundtrack which only creeps in when necessary and is silent when needed (it is key to the entire film really), and an extremely steady hand behind the camera, makes for a truly cinematic experience.
