Kelly Snyders’s review published on Letterboxd:
I thought The Book Thief was an awful adaptation of an excellent book, but this absolutely takes the cake...
Everything that made Picoult's story great is completely lost in this manipulative, melodramatic piece of Hollywood fluff. The direction and composition felt amateur, the editing was all over the place (scenes were rushed and choppy in places and then unnecessarily drawn out in others), absolutely none of the characters felt authentic despite a semi-reasonable cast, and Cassavetes took the arrogant liberty of rewriting the entire ending of the story (supposedly against the author's wishes). NOT COOL MAN! Picoult's novel is complicated, intense and challenging, and this film turns it into a soulless cliché just ripe 'n ready for stay-at-home mummies.
If you have yet to encounter My Sister's Keeper in either form, then do yourself a favour and just read the book. Please.
