  There’s a moment where Tom Waits emerges from a haze of cigarette smoke that might be one of the greatest shots in cinema history.

  Quirky, coming of age dramady is a bit of a worn out trope, but this picture really captures the spirit of being too old to be a kid but too young for the adult world. Moments of laugh out loud comedy are matched with real gut punching reality and feelings, like the look on Alana’s face when she finally stops the truck. It’s a looks that screams “I’m stuck in the netherworld of adolescence and I’ll do anything to get out”.
