The Lighthouse

The Lighthouse ★★★★½

I wasn't sure what my opinion was on this film as I left the theatre. I did think it was just good at first. But the more i thought about it, I noticed the lack of flaws in the film.

First off, Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson are amazing . You can't even see a glimpse of the actors through their unhinged performances. Seeing Robert's character become steadily mental and vocal through their conversations and expressions was so seamless. The way Eggers left certain scenes up for interpretation instead of spoon feeding everything to us made it even more memorable. Also the technical aspects of the film were stunning as if it was out of the early 90s through the suffocating and trapping 1.19:1 aspect ratio, vivid black-and-white cinematography and perfect editing.

This film must have been impossible to market because it is not a conventional horror film. There aren't any "monsters" or jump scares that fans of the genre are probably expecting. Even Eggers first film "The Witch" was a meticulous slow-burning horror film without any conventional scares.

This film is truly one of the more original films I've seen in a while. It doesn't follow by any rules and instead goes the opposite way. There were some points where I kind of became a little drowsy especially in the beginning. But when the story started coming into place, it never showed any signs of slowing down. It was also suprisingly funny (love the fart jokes).

I do want to watch it again and maybe my opinion will change who knows.
