Kern’s review published on Letterboxd:
Poignant, confident, complex, and hilarious. This should be imperative viewing. The narrative intricately balances humor with incredibly deep thematic material including racial identity, perception, gentrification, police violence, and prison rehabilitation. It's stunning that it maintains an intentionally off-putting tonal balance this well throughout.
Blindspotting truly rests on the shoulders of lead actors (and co-writers) Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal. The film earns our empathy because Diggs and Casal breathe life into our multi-dimensional main characters. Even the supporting characters feel authentic and fleshed-out. Alternating between jaw-droppingly tense and laugh-out-loud hilarious, in a year full of breakout directorial debuts, Carlos López Estrada absolutely has one of the best.
