The Report

The Report ★★½

The editing/pacing kept my attention throughout, and it starts off relatively strong but eventually descends into a series of big impassioned speeches with big impassioned speech music. Thankfully, doesn’t dumb down the material to the point of condescension, but I wish it’d avoided exposition altogether; I always mention my love of films that just show people doing their jobs very well, and I wish there’d been more of that; even if the details completely fly over my head, it’s more interesting than those (however brief) pauses to explain the job being done. When it comes down to it, the best way to make material like this as compelling as possible is through character development, and I could make a case for how Spotlight excels where this fails when it comes to building interesting character dynamics, but The Report is too evaporative and middling to really warrant it here.
