Emergency 2022
Sundance 2022
Film #16
So, for real, this will conclude my Sundance 2022 experience (although I also purchased a ticket for Palm Trees and Power Lines but only watched about 15 minutes and decided I really was not in the mood for what that film had to offer). For me, this year's festival was even more successful than last year in terms of overall quality.
Emergency tells the story of a couple of college friends who attempt to complete the…

Emergency 2022
This was a nice surprise. Starts off as a comedy then transitions smoothly into an anxiety inducing suspense thriller. Essentially this is a story of real friendship. Subtle racism peeks its head out but doesn't beat you over the head. The cast was great led by RJ Cyler(liked this fella in every film I've seen him in so far). The bond between Sean(RJ Cyler) and Kunle(Donald Elise Watkins) felt genuine. Also really liked their other friend Carlos(Sebastian Chacon).
With this…

Do the Right Thing 1989
Spike Lee is a controversial filmmaker and a controversial person. And probably the only reason this film has achieved status as his magnum opus is that, for once, he actually tries to remain even handed in his approach when it comes his politics in his films, whilst at the same time diving in wildly controversial territory. He actually decides to play up the ambiguity, both of the morality and of the character's motivations, which was a smart move that he…

Swallow 2019
With a name like Swallow, this was a lot to slowly digest. Super oddball premise, taking it there with some insanely gross moments and just the pure thought of some those make me cringe. Still doesn’t lean fully into thriller/horror past the situation itself and is way more a character study/drama. Nicely directed with solid performances and although not entirely what I thought going in, I enjoyed it. 7.2/10🚽

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial 1982
"This is reality, Greg"
Watched this constantly as a kid, but reached a point as a teen where I found myself rejecting its brand of emotional transparency. I feel like I've come full circle as I became overwhelmed with emotion really as soon as it hits the halfway mark. The truly special kids movies take children's emotions seriously, and this never minimizes how Elliott feels about his connection with his titular alien buddy.
Henry Thomas in this, good grief. In…

Top Gun 1986
A movie that launched a thousand cliches, imitators, parodies, subtextual analyses, and careers. I never bothered to watch it since I felt like I had already seen it.
Looks great. Hard to take seriously at this point. More of a classroom, coming of age movie than I expected (which is the best stuff in it).
So propagandic in its style, I expected the Party Posse to show up and sing "Yvan eht Nioj

eXistenZ 1999
eXistenZ. 1999. Directed by David Cronenberg.
At the end of the 1990’s the anxiety over the internet, virtual reality, and terrorism were at an all time high. Cronenberg has truly made a film about politics and a new generation obsessed with virtual reality. He infused fatwah’s which were common on TV news each night. Due to the war in the east, each celebrity that spoke with the absurd Xenophobia, that was rampant at the time were put on a list.…
