Beautiful Boy is... okay. I wish I was as emotionally affected as the film wanted me to be, but so many directorial decisions (like every music choice) took me out of it. Chalamet is easily the best part. Steve Carell in those yelling scenes oh boy the Michael Scott JUMPED out
This really worked for me. Another huge technical marvel from Chazelle, with a perfectionist attention to detail. The ending (the moon and especially what comes after) really pack a punch. The sound design on this thing is pretty spectacular. Very visceral, especially in tandem with the dizzying camerawork. Justin Hurwitz’s melodic score is haunting. All of its craft nominations will be deserved.
Foy is very good even if the role is typical. Gosling surprised me. I prefer his more “goofy”…
As many have said, BlacKkKlansman is hauntingly relevant and the movie openly reminds us of this, but it is also a thoroughly engrossing experience from start to finish, humorous and horrifying. It’s not the most subtle filmmaking but frankly, this subject matter is anything but subtle. John David Washington is a really fun leading man. Not to jinx, but I would be surprised if this didn’t have a major Oscar presence, particularly for Spike Lee.
