Another masterpiece from Bergman, a director whose films continue to captivate me every time I watch one. After watching 8 of his films, I can easily call him one of my favorites.
The Seventh Seal captures the mood of the medieval setting so accurately. The viewer is left with an extremely realistic yet fantastical portrayal of humanity and conflict during the time, and how humanity used religion to help understand the method to the madness, despite there not being any. This is the best film about the time period, rivaled only by Tarkovsky’s Andrei Rublev. And Tarkovsky’s wonderfully written line of dialogue from his 1979 masterpiece Stalker sums up this film perfectly:…
