Candyman ★★★

Confident filmmaking by DaCosta layered upon a very rickety story base, one that really struggles to sell us on the backstory it's trying to build upon. It's a solid atmosphere driven horror film with effective visceral imagery and good performances, but each time it attempts to venture into the characters' trauma, the larger societal context, or the overarching Candyman mythology, it loses its subtext and begins to feel like a film that cobbled together its narrative pieces from everywhere except its own story - it's essentially a jagged mishmash of sequel-homage and present day commentary that never actually puts those puzzle pieces together. Glad it's doing well, but overall a mixed bag for me.
