Cruella ★★★½

A gloriously deranged and self indulgent display of lavish costumes, hilariously overdone needle drops, and massive gaps in logic, and it's somehow kind of great! In an increasingly generic era of corporatization in the film industry, it's nice to see one of these films at least have some sort of personality. Yeah it's overstuffed and some of the character motivations and plot developments are a bit thin, but it leans into the visuals and the camp so goddamn well that it's difficult not to be entertained. And it's not like there isn't any effective character work either. It's hard to go wrong when you have the likes of Aline Brosh McKenna, Dana Fox, and Tony McNamara crafting the story, and performers like Stone and Thompson delivering every line with such equal glee and maliciousness. I initially wasn't even sure if I'd go see this in the theater, but I'm glad I did. Genuinely one of the better films of the year so far.
