Gimmicked storytelling notwithstanding, Boyhood tells a great story of what it’s like to grow up a boy. But the good thing about the film is it’s about more than him. We have a girl, a mom, and all her terrible boyfriends and husbands.
Arquette is likable enough that we forgive her for the mistakes she makes -and she makes a lot- and Hawke is outstanding as a father who does the reverse version of a midlife crisis. The one weak…

I really respect movies that have the nerve to not over complicate their plot in order to build fake tension. That make its protagonist someone who we get to know not through unreal situations, but interactions with other characters. That builds to a conclusion that isn't a 'happy ever after' scenario as much as a new beginning.
Needless to say, I respect Eighth Grade A LOT.
