this is a tough one, because the gender politics and social norms of the time feel even more ancient than they actually are. if you can get around that, and accept this film seems to be a first major step in pushing back against those regressive norms, then it's easier to connect with what the film is trying to say.

i have an infrequent recurring dream where some sort of murder has been committed and i get stuck cleaning up the crime scene and evading the authorities. not sure what it means but this movie reminds me of it.

the scenes with dan duryea are the standouts. won't defend the hokey final scene or the dull first 15 minutes.

the lack of subtlety in the film's message isn't exactly ideal, but it can be forgiven. not that i find "families need to stick together" or "try to see the good in people" as particularly interesting or unique messages. it feels kind of empty for a film that apparently has a lot to say when it just kind of ends up saying... nothing.

the biggest sin is it's just painfully unfunny. so many cringey gags filled with john oliver style…

maybe not a great film overall, but it's definitely ahead of its peers as far as character placement, camera movement, etc.
