Another example of a pretty good work that would have been served much better had McQueen not had to compress it down into a movie-of-the-week. In fact, none of the first four “Small Axe” installments that I’ve seen has felt fully formed. Just about any of them could have been compelling, full-length features; the fact that they had to be packaged up into a five-part mini-series was probably good for marketing but not so great for storytelling.
