Each time I rewatch this, it’s the sterling plot mechanics, the logical efficiency of every twist, the way each element has a discrete purpose that’s tidily fulfilled by the closing credits, that impresses me the most. And I don’t even like this kind of pat, fait accompli, Hollywood storytelling! It’s just that it’s done so exceptionally well here that it’s impossible to deny the skill and sense of duty to the audience at work. Tthis deftness is so striking it’s easy to overlook the truly superb performances from Fox and Lloyd. Both play to the last row, but they do that in the best possible way; they’re bright and loud and magnetic, adding invaluable dimension to the thrust of the storyline.
