I succumbed to peer pressure and double-featured this, sort of, alongside “Oppenheimer” during opening weekend. It feels great to get a movie this fun and novel and genuinely artistic to break box office records. It’s best when it’s at its most absurd; I was immensely grateful when its foray into “the real world” turned out to be relatively brief, and Barbie and company headed right back into the bizarre utopia of Barbieland. It’s less interesting when it’s delivering turgid paragraphs of feminist theory and/or when it stoops to standard Hollywood-style family sentimentality. Still, on the whole, there’s not a lot to get annoyed with here; there’s too much fun to be had.
