Brief Encounter 1945
I rewatched this after Park Chan-Wook cited it as inspiration for “Decision to Leave.” Celia Johnson’s performance is fascinating; on the surface, her character is not particularly likable, but she somehow elicits great sympathy. Trevor Howard is terrific, though his part is a cakewalk compared to hers. Thanks to the 1995 audio commentary by Bruce Eder, during this viewing I also deeply appreciated the incredibly artful use of sound throughout. It’s just a wonderful little gem.
