Dream Scenario

Dream Scenario ★★★½

Just as in life, in movies we often see what we want to see, so it's no accident that where a generation of digital natives probably interprets “Dream Scenario” as a commentary on the nature of viral fame, for me it looks more like a commentary on being middle aged. Both can be true, I suppose, but the elements of director Kristoffer Borgli’s black comedy that ring truest, the most universal themes, concern finding oneself at a certain age where three quarters of a lifetime of toiling seems to amount to nothing, and we find ourselves alone and at odds with the world. The movie riffs on this and quite successfully for long stretches, and while it doesn't quite stick the landing, it brings enough, post-Charlie Kaufman insight to make it worthwhile.
