Dredd ★★★★

I watched this years ago, probably when it was dumped on video after its disappointing theatrical release, and I’m amazed how well it holds up on a fresh rewatch. It feels practically Carpenter-esque in its ability to generate thick, palpable tension from a script that’s neither showy or even superficially remarkable. That alone would be enough to recommend it, but its setting, a super-sized, brutalist-style public housing project populated by a full ecosystem of economically disadvantaged denizens of an overpopulated city, contextualizes its super-hero protagonists with more sophistication than just about any other comic book adaptation I can remember.
