Khoi Vinh’s review published on Letterboxd:
I can’t pretend that I don’t prefer the deconstructionist take of “Shin Godzilla” over this more traditionally tooled take on the Godzilla legend—but this is not bad at all. Director Takashi Yamazaki takes care of business first by making sure that he gets all of the ’zilla mayhem just right, and the wanton destruction he renders on the screen is truly beautiful. But those are just jewels encrusting a crown of genuinely affecting, post-Hiroshima melodrama. The human elements are corny but patiently, carefully earned, and they rise well above the level of filler between scenes of kaiju havoc. This is not a masterpiece but it is a triumph in how conventionally un-terrible it is.
Took the kids to see this at AMC Empire 25 on a rainy Sunday. Big hit!
