I find Assayas’s recent work, “Personal Shopper” and “The Clouds of Sils Mara” to be total nonsense but this film is a triumph. It’s fleetfooted and nimble and pretty damn funny, and it lets Maggie Cheung shine in a way I had never seen before.

Update 2022-03-14: I swear this happened—in a dream last night I realized the role of René was played by a grown up Jean-Pierre Leaud of “Les Quatre Cents Coups”!
