L'Argent ★★★★

Hardly seems like a movie at all when you inventory its constituent parts—there's hardly any character development, defiantly wooden acting, no soundtrack to speak of, and a nearly motionless camera that seems to always be focused on the wrong things while the real action is happening off screen. And yet in the aggregate the conspicuous lack of passion is mesmerizing; the matter-of-fact compositions and color are gorgeous; the inscrutability of the actors allows us to peer into the characters' inner lives with our own imaginations; and the events unfold with a uniquely terrifying quality of horror.
