Khoi Vinh’s review published on Letterboxd:
Disney drives me batty. On the one hand, they give us a true postcard of a film. “Luca” is formally gorgeous and visually delightful. And on the other hand, they resort almost reflexively to retrograde character signaling rules like: the natural state of a protagonist is a white person; the “most ethnic” character is the villain; prejudice is an easily dismissed trifle. They seem to be incapable of making a movie without falling prey to these backwards instincts, even when they take as their obvious template the Studio Ghibli sensibility, as they do here.
