Mangrove ★★½

McQueen is a master of carefully considered staging that allows emotional resonance to boil over but he brings little of that nuance to this fairly creaky, overly polemic script. He does make the proceedings watchable, but he only rarely finds enough interest in the events to do what he really likes to do, which is to bore inside the skull of his characters. The result is shocking for a McQueen film because it’s so frequently unsubtle.
