Khoi Vinh’s review published on Letterboxd:
The title makes it sound like you're going to see hordes of samurai fighters slashing one another on a bloody battlefield, but there's really only one scene that delivers anything close to that kind of spectacle. A better title might be "Samurai Moral Objection," which is not to say that the movie underdelivers in its plot's dramatic urgency. On the contrary, it's riveting and emotionally gut-wrenching to watch Toshiro Mifune and his family struggle with the quandary of whether to give into the whims of their feudal lord or preserve the sanctity of family bonds. Brilliant stuff.
